Spoiler Summary/Synopsis:

Although Tsukasa doesn’t remember much of her life as a human, including her original name, she does remember her encounter with a man, whom she did not know was the emperor. She wonders if she had not agreed to help him, her life might have been very different.

The emperor brings Tsukasa paper. She admires it as the emperor confesses he doesn’t know what to write. In order to not waste paper, they use wooden tablets for him to write a message to Kaguya. His first attempt doesn’t meet with Tsukasa’s approval. She states words a girl would like to hear. The emperor wants her to write this down for him. Tsukasa reminds him that she cannot read or write.

Tsukasa accepts the emperor’s offer to educate her on reading and writing. She sees how this would help her apothecary work. The emperor asks for her name, but she refuses. Were she to tell him, they would no longer be equals. Further, she doesn’t want to know the woman this man is obsessed with, nor does she want to know whom he is.

The emperor agrees and Tsukasa’s letters to Kaguya are well received. As such, Kaguya sends a letter back in response. The happy emperor pays Tsukasa another visit to work on his reply. However, happiness was not in the immediate future for either Tsukasa or the emperor.

Thoughts/Review:

I love getting this backstory lore in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 200. And it is fun seeing Tsukasa give love advice to the emperor.

Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 200

Unknown Parties

One interesting element in Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 200 is that Tsukasa is working with unknown parties. She does not know that the man she is helping is the emperor. She understands that he is someone of importance. Knowing that this man she was helping is the emperor, and thus a descendant of the goddess Amaterasu, would crimp their relationship. Rules of hierarchy are pretty strict in Japan, especially in the past.

As to Tsukasa not knowing Kaguya’s name, that too makes sense. After all, if she knows Kaguya’s name, then she would know she was dealing with the emperor. Therefor, it is best for Tsukasa to remain ignorant of these things, even if she suspects X or Y.

I probably need to go back and reread some older, flashback chapters. I want to say that Tsukasa heard of the name Kaguya. But it seems Tsukasa never met Kaguya. If that’s the case, then it would explain why Tsukasa doesn’t recognize Kaguya in the present. And I suspect Kaguya doesn’t know Tsukasa from the past. I think that eventually, the two will piece things together and come to a conclusion.

Final Thoughts and Conclusion

Let me wrap up my review of Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 200 with some final thoughts.

  • Hata-sensei loves his troll characters. In this instance, it was the bamboo cutter’s wife. Her crack on dragging a woman into the brush (to make said woman a man’s wife) was wrong and funny. And her desire to see something lewd happen with her adopted daughter was also wrong and funny.
  • As to Kaguya, I like seeing this softer side of her character. In the present, she’s aloof at times, but usually has a haughty air to her. She never shows this softer side.
  • Now we know why Tsukasa can read ancient Japanese.

In the end, Tonikaku Cawaii Chapter 200 offers more, interesting backstory and lore. I love it!
